Social Climbers Joins the noissue Eco-Alliance as a Step Toward Becoming a More Sustainable Business

We're not a fully ethical athleisure wear company.

In all honestly, as much as we'd like to be, it's hard for a business as small as ours. We are a new business having only cropped up to the public a few months ago from the date that we're publishing this post. At this point, we've yet to even launch our first official collection.

So why aren't we fully sustainable?

We invest a significant amount of our resources into creating new and original climbing wear with the goal of delivering something completely unique to the market. And while doing so, we also want our final products to be as accessible to as many of you as possible.

Doing business fully sustainably is expensive. While planning for the designing, sourcing, and manufacturing of our upcoming collection, we considered all the different ways that we could realistically conduct ourselves most sustainably while still allowing ourselves to price our products accessibly and remain profitable for the sustainability of our own business. To put things into perspective - sustainable practices can drive up certain costs by up to 50%!

Additionally, certain acts of sustainability simply aren't feasible for brands like ours. For example, for the profitability of fabric suppliers, minimum order quantities for specific sustainable fabrics are set incredibly high. By placing orders to meet these minimum order quantities, we risk the possibility of having excess fabric, which can result in increased wastage, which then becomes counter-productive as an act of sustainability.

We're not trying to make excuses or justify ourselves, but it's important to us that we're completely transparent.

What's the point of sharing this with you?

It's to let you know that we acknowledge our imperfections. At this point in time, there are a few practices that we've already implemented in an effort to create a less damaging and more positive impact on the environment.

Some of these practices include:

  • Designing and creating products that will last (timeless designs and high-quality pieces) in order to reduce waste
  • Manufacturing in small quantities - although this drives our cost per unit up, it minimises the environmental impact that comes with overproduction
  • Sourcing fabrics for the upcoming Core Carefree collection comprising of recycled materials in order to minimise the use of virgin fibers resulting in reduced the consumption of resources (e.g. energy and water) required for the processing of fabrics

In sharing these with you, we're aware that there's still so much more that we can do to be better. And while we're doing the best we can for now given the size and state of our business, we'd like to take this opportunity to make a promise to ourselves and to you, here and now, of our commitment to continue to take baby steps in order to move us in the direction of becoming a more ethical business as we grow.

We'd also like to share with you the most recent step we've taken in joining the noissue Eco-Alliance. Find out more about the Eco-Alliance's mission and what we're doing differently as we become a part of it below.

What is the noissue Eco-Alliance?

The Eco Alliance is a growing community of businesses, makers, and brands who are committed to being better together for the good of the planet and people.

The alliance's mission is to support/empower the shift to sustainable business practices by providing sustainable packaging (noissue). As a proud member of the Eco-Alliance, for every order you place with us, we package and send it out to you in packaging that is 100% compostable/recyclable.

Plus, for every order we place at noissue for our packaging, the Eco-Alliance plants trees in areas in need. This means that for every order you place with Social Climbers, you provide a small contribution to reforestation!
